Muttaburra
The Muttaburrasaurus Langdoni
In 1963 local Grazier Doug Langdon uncovered the most complete fossilized Dinosaur skeleton yet to be discovered in Australia. Being the first of its kind it was named the Muttaburrasaurus Langdoni. The Muttaburrasaurus was a plant eating, land living dinosaur that roamed the Earth around 100 million years ago.
The replica of the Muttaburrasaurus Langdoni has a new home in the Muttaburrasaurus Interpretation Centre. The fossilised remains of the dinosaur are currently housed in the Queensland Museum in Brisbane.
Centre of Queensland monument
The Centre of Queensland Monument was constructed to acknowledge Muttaburra being the closest town to the geographical centre of Queensland. The monument consists of various elements representing Muttaburra and the pathway represents the annual rainfall since 1885 and the history of Muttaburra since 1860. The coordinates for the surveyed geographical centre of Queensland are 22ᵒ 29' 13" South 144ᵒ 25' 54" East.
Dr Arratta Memorial Museum
After the closure of the Muttaburra Hospital on 1989, the building was converted into a historical display and museum and was named in honour of Dr Joseph Arratta who spent 35 years in the community and was awarded the MBE for his service. The museum has both medical and hospital displays and the operating theatre dates back to 1933 and is equipped.
A.A. Cassimatis Store and Cottage
A.A. Cassimatis brought his family from Greece to Australia in 1913. The Cassimatis Store closed its door in 1978 having been a bank, green grocer, haberdashery, emporium, cafe, white goods merchant, liquor store and motor spirits. The Cassimatis Store museum has on display; old cash register, scales, lolly jars, soft drink machines and other unique items.
Next to the Store is the house where George and Stavrolla Cassimatis and their five children live. The Cassimatis home shows living conditions in the early 1900's and is furnished with much of the original furniture and personal possessions.
Union Camp and Union Hole
In May of 1891 approximately 400 shearers camped at Union Hole during the great shearers' strike. Union Hole is where the shearers drew water and carted it back to their camp by dray. There are still some remains of the campsite.
Muttaburra Aquatic Centre
The Muttaburra Aquatic Centre is open all year round and contains a 25 metre swimming pool and heated spa. It is home to the Muttaburra Mudskippers Swimming Club and is open to the public.
